Loss Programs?
What about Weight Loss Programs and Diets?
Many physicians still do not understand obesity
surgery. We sometimes hear from other doctors how this patient
or that patient lost 70-80 lbs through diet and exercise. We know
it is possible, but we also know the chances of keeping this weight
off for more than two years is extremely small. Weight gain or failure
after weight loss is common, and many patients who have lived with
morbid obesity can attest to this. The shortsighted physician will
see it as a problem of patient will and will miss a great opportunity
to apply science to patient care.
The fact is that 95 percent of patients who are morbidly obese
will fail to loose weight through diet and exercise and keep it off
for more than 5 years. If a cancer medication failed to work
in 95 percent of patients, not many physicians would use it. Yet almost
all physicians recommend diet and exercise programs to treat morbid
obesity.
Obesity is poorly understood, and because physicians as well as the
public have an open prejudice against the obese patient, the right
treatment is often withheld. As bariatric surgeons we often remind
our medical colleagues to blame the disease not the patient, and obesity
is certainly a disease that requires a treatment that works.
Buying into whatever weight loss programs are selling
The old adage, "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is,"
is proven over and over as Americans spend almost $35 billion a year
on weight loss programs and products claiming to require little effort
yet promising impressive results to dieters.
In spite of efforts of the medical and academic communities, government
regulatory agencies, and even providers of weight loss programs and
services, too many obese people continue to purchase products that
promise miracles that aren't achievable and, in many instances, can
threaten the health of the consumer.
An additional problem is people having unrealistic notions about how
much weight they can lose or keep off over time, and facing devastating
blows to their self-esteem when yet another weight loss program fails
them.
Still, the morbidly obese patient population needs relief. When a
sales pitch for a new diet or fat-fighting pill or liquid shake or
preplanned food regimen comes around, obese people want to put all
their experience of past failures on special diets and weight loss
programs aside and believe that maybe this time they've found something
that will work.
ObesitySolutions is a different kind of weight loss program. Addressing
the emotional, psychological, and the physical issues facing morbidly
obese patients, we don't offer a hyped-up sales pitch about some new
fad. We offer our patients tools they can actually use to lose and
keep off their excess weight.
