How to get started with Gastric Bypass Surgery to treat Morbid
Obesity
If you would like to learn about surgery for morbid obesity, you can
begin the process by using our Contact
Form or calling ObesitySolutions at 770-534-0110 or toll
free at 877-921-0110. Our representative will take
your information, including name, address, phone number and e-mail
address. You will then receive an invitation to our next informational
lecture.
Introduction to Gastric Bypass Surgery
Lecture
At this presentation, which
is a required step in our surgical
weight loss program, you will learn about the harmful effects
of obesity and diseases it causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure,
sleep apnea, arthritis, gall bladder problems, heart attacks and
cancer. You will also learn why you are unable to lose weight (it's
not your fault!), and finally what can be done to help you lose
up to 70-90% of your excess body weight.
Our main concern is that you go through the gastric bypass operation
safely, but also that you lose the weight and keep it off. To this
end, you will also be introduced to the very important psychological
portion of our surgical weight loss program. We do not want our patients
to go from being a person with morbid
obesity and struggling unsuccessfully to manage an eating disorder,
to being a thin person still struggling to manage an eating disorder.
You will have an opportunity to meet some of our patients, and ask
questions of them and our physicians and staff.
If, after attending the lecture, you are interested in pursuing weight
loss surgery, we will provide you with a multi-page questionnaire/application
packet which will be returned to the office of the bariatric clinic
coordinator. You will be contacted to schedule an application review
to meet with the ObesitySolutions team, which includes a representative
from the sleep lab and program and a psychologist.
Additional Tests before for Gastric Bypass Surgery
Patients will meet with our nurse clinician to determine if any special
testing needs to be done before surgery, such as heart studies or
ultrasound of the gallbladder. Only after approval of a psychotherapist
and the bariatric clinic coordinator's office do we submit your information
to your insurance company for approval. Once that approval is received,
the office will call you to set a surgery date. A week or two before
surgery you will meet with one of our surgeons in the office for a
physical examination and a final discussion of the plan for your gastric
bypass surgery.
That same day you will meet with our anesthesiologists and have blood
work, EKG, chest x-ray and often an arterial blood gas performed.
You are now ready for your surgery. This process is well thought out
and very important. We understand that once you have made the decision
to have weight loss
surgery, you are anxious to proceed right away. Our patients have
said the process of pre-op preparation is worthwhile, and looking
back they feel it was important to take the time to understand why
they are obese and how to effectively fight the disease of obesity.
