Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of your body fat based on height and weight. Though it does not directly measure percent of body fat, it does provide a more accurate measure of appropriate weight ranges than weight alone.

To qualify for obesity surgery, you need a BMI of 40 or more. But you may also qualify with a BMI of 35, if you suffer from obesity-related health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease.

BMI Categories:

    • Underweight = 18.5 or less
    • Normal weight = 18.5 – 24.9
    • Overweight = 25 – 29.9
    • Obese (class I) = 30 – 34.9
    • Obese (class II) = 35 – 39.9
    • Obese (class III) = 40 or more

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, people (18 or older) with a BMI of 25 or more are considered at risk for premature death and disability as a consequence of overweight and obesity. These health risks increase as the obesity increases.

I knew that Dr. Procter would be the best surgeon choice for me. I was so impressed with the knowledge and attention to detail he gave to the individual patient's needs. I feel as if they have given me my life back. I know it sounds suspect, but I really have nothing negative to say about my care.

Dr. Procter is among the BEST of the BEST! There was something about him and his partner, Dr. Richard, that put me at ease from the first. His patients are aware of the risks as well as the benefits of the surgery. I have been nothing but impressed. They truly strive to make this a positive life-changing experience.

Dianne G. - Cleveland, GA
Dr. Procter knows his stuff. He really cares about his patients and the program! He has a nine-room wing of the hospital Lanier Park Campus catered to gastric bypass surgery. The nurses in the hospital request to be there. On a scale of 1-10 and the best being a 10, Dr. Procter is a 100.
